About the Role

The Business Development Manager leads in ensuring optimal resourcing of Plan Kenya’s strategy, identifying diverse funding sources locally and internationally. The role involves strategic leadership, engagement with private sector companies, maintaining a healthy funding pipeline, bid development, capability building, and safeguarding children and young people.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide leadership in the design and implementation of the Resource Mobilization strategy.
  • Ensure alignment of Plan Kenya’s Grants Funding Portfolio with the organization’s strategies.
  • Lead the review and implementation of the Business Development strategy.

Strategic Engagement and Prepositioning

  • Lead the phased roll-out of the Local Fundraising Strategy.
  • Develop business cases and funding propositions for private sector engagement.
  • Manage end-to-end business development processes for private sector companies, major donors, and philanthropic foundations.

Delivering a Healthy Funding Pipeline

  • Explore and diversify new business opportunities from institutional donors, corporates, and non-institutional donors.
  • Drive the diversification of PIK’s funding portfolio while ensuring alignment with PIK’s five-year strategy.
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with potential donors.

Bid Development

  • Coordinate the design of Expressions of Interest, concept notes, and/or proposals.
  • Provide strategic leadership in the development, writing, and packaging of successful grant applications.
  • Contribute to institutional learning by documenting and sharing best practices.

Capability Building and People Management

  • Provide vision, direction, and coaching to the Business Development Team.
  • Ensure the Business Development team operates as a high-performing unit.
  • Conduct performance management processes for direct reports.

Financial Responsibility

  • Contribute to the coordination of the BD departmental budget preparation and analysis.
  • Support timely project expenditures aligned with the budget.

Supporting YODA Rollout

  • Actively participate in and support the roll-out of YODA.
  • Exercise oversight over YODA-specific functions, including project and grant management.

Safeguarding Children and Young People and Gender Equality and Inclusion

  • Ensure adherence to Plan International’s safeguarding and gender equality policies.
  • Embed safeguarding and gender equality principles in project design and implementation.
  • Contribute to Plan Kenya’s global efforts to ensure safeguarding and gender equality.

Leadership Competencies

Technical Expertise, Skills, and Knowledge

  • Degree in International Relations, Development Studies, or similar.
  • 7 years of relevant experience in the INGO sector, with expertise in Business Development.
  • Proven track record in proposal writing and fundraising.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and influence stakeholders.
  • Experience in team leadership and coaching.
