How KNEC resolved the discrepancies in KCPE results that affected some candidates

KNEC fixes errors in KCPE results accessed via SMS

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has admitted that there were some discrepancies in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results that were sent to candidates via the SMS short code 40054. The council said that it had received complaints from some candidates who noticed that their marks and grades in some subjects were not aligned correctly or were missing some symbols.

In a statement issued on Saturday, KNEC CEO Dr. David Njengere said that the errors were caused by “configuration issues” with the SMS service provider and that they had been resolved promptly. He assured the candidates that the results on the KNEC portal were accurate and that only those who used the SMS short code were affected.

Dr. Njengere also said that KNEC had reviewed all the appeals from candidates who had low marks in some subjects, mainly in English and Kiswahili. He said that there were 133 candidates who were affected and that their results had been updated appropriately.

He further addressed the reports of a school where all candidates scored 75 marks in Science, saying that it was not a case of examination irregularity. He explained that Science was a multiple-choice question paper and that it was possible for the candidates to get identical marks. He said that KNEC did not have any evidence of cheating in the school and that it needed a supporting report to sanction the results.

He advised the candidates to collect their result slips from their schools and to submit any appeals within the 30-day period as stipulated in the KNEC Rules of 2015 Legal Notice 131.

TSC invites teachers to apply for over 36,000 promotion slots

TSC invites teachers to apply for over 36,000 promotion slots

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that it has 36,505 vacancies for promotions for teachers in primary and secondary schools.

The TSC chief executive officer Nancy Macharia said that 17,914 of these vacancies are for primary school teachers in various grades. She urged teachers to apply for these positions, especially those in Special Needs Education, where there is a serious shortage of qualified staff.

Macharia said that the TSC has not been able to fill all the promotional positions in the past, even after lowering the requirements. She encouraged the teachers who have been shortlisted for the interviews, which will take place from December 4 to 16, to attend them without fail.

Macharia was speaking at the Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association annual delegates conference in Mombasa. She thanked the government for allocating Sh1 billion for the promotion of teachers in the 2023-24 financial year. She said that this was the first time since 2011 that the TSC received funds for this purpose.

She also said that the government provided funds to recruit 56,000 teachers in the last year, most of whom were posted to the Junior School. She advised the unemployed teachers to apply for jobs in any part of the country, and not to limit themselves to their home counties.

She said that in the recent recruitment exercise, 1,123 vacancies remained unfilled across the country, despite the high number of jobless teachers in other counties.

Macharia also said that the TSC has trained 56,928 teachers, including 48,550 newly recruited Junior School teachers and 8,378 teachers who were transferred from primary to Junior School. She said that the TSC has automated the transfer process for teachers, to make it easier and more transparent.

She said that the teachers can now track the status of their transfer requests online, and that the approval process is also done online by the relevant authorities. She said that the TSC is upgrading the current transfer module to make it more intelligent and accurate, and that it is piloting a new module that will match the teacher applications to the available vacancies.

Macharia also said that the TSC will allow the current primary school heads to continue managing the Junior School, as the commission consults with stakeholders on the best administrative structure for the Comprehensive School (Pre-primary to Grade 9).

She said that the TSC is also digitising its estimated 108 million records, which include the personal files, discipline files, and pension files of the teachers and the secretariat staff. She said that this will improve the efficiency and accuracy of the TSC services.

How to easily apply for TSC Inter-County transfers

How to easily apply for TSC Inter-County transfers,

How to easily apply for TSC Inter-County transfers

For you to get a TSC transfer especially outside your county of duty is not  a walk in the park. Not all teachers are comfortable with the environments where they are stationed to execute their duties.

Most teachers tend to seek for the transfer but in vain they even end up giving up. If you among those teachers this article will assist you fulfil your  quest to be in your dream work  station.

Some of the reasons that may compel a teacher to seek transfer include:

  • Filial separation, which in most cases stir mistrust in marriages and absenteeism in parenting
  • Transfer on grounds of illness must be accompanied by a recommendation letter from a qualified physician.
  • Ill dependants, who have no one to take care of, except the teacher seeking transfer.
  • Being unable to monitor projects at home due to long distances
  • Difficulty in adapting to a particular environment.
  • Overstay in a particular school
  • Inability to achieve good results in the current school due to inevitable circumstances

To apply for a TCS transfer, a teacher must follow the procedure below promptly.

Procedure

  • Download the transfer form.
  • Print 3 copies of the transfer form
  • Fill all the relevant sections of the three transfer forms neatly and completely. In the space for school where you want to transfer to, fill at least five schools clearly. Most teachers do write only one school, a move that limits them in case their subject combinations have no chance in that school. Many schools increase your chances of success.
  • Under the section for reasons for transfer, ensure you write a valid reason. Some of the reasons stated above are very valid.
  • Take the three transfer forms to your head for signing. Convince your head to write, “Transfer with a possible replacement if available in future.” What he writes is what the county director will recommend.
  • Take the three transfer forms to the county director/ staffing officer for signing
  • Leave one of the forms with the county director, send another one to the staffing officer, Teachers’ Service Commission, and submit another one to your current head. Ensure you photocopy it before submission.
  • After a month (even before getting acknowledgement) start tracking your form in person at the TSC headquarters. Each time you go there, carry the photocopy of the transfer form and ensure you see the staffing officer in charge of your county at the headquarters.

You should take note of this:

  • No teacher shall move from one station to another before he/she receives a letter of transfer from the Commission/TSC County Director/Staffing Officer.
  • A teacher’s transfer request may not be considered until he/she has served in a station he/she is assigned to teach for a period not less than five years, except under conditions specified in regulation 27 (2) of the Code of Regulations for Teachers.
  • Transfer requests are normally considered in the month of October.
