Purpose/Project Description

Mercy Corps is conducting applied research to understand how different incentive structures can promote collective action for integrated land regeneration and gender-inclusive land management in Kenya. The research will focus on designing and testing incentive mechanisms to support sustainable land management practices, particularly in Garissa and Wajir counties.

Consultant Objectives

  • Co-lead the participatory design of incentive mechanisms.
  • Support the design and implementation of applied research activities.
  • Analyze and synthesize study findings.

Consultant Activities

The Consultant will:

  • Review program documents and participate in meetings with Mercy Corps staff.
  • Coordinate with Mercy Corps to conduct initial interviews with communities and leaders.
  • Co-lead the design of incentive mechanisms in collaboration with target communities.
  • Develop a research protocol and coordinate data collection with program staff.
  • Provide interim updates and final reports based on study findings.

Consultant Deliverables

The Consultant will develop and submit:

  • Inception report outlining the approach to participatory design.
  • Finalized work plan for the assignment.
  • Data collection tools and detailed research plan.
  • Interim updates and final report on study findings.

Projected Timeframe / Schedule

The research should be completed within 50 working days between April 2024 and August 2024.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Master’s degree in relevant field; PhD preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in community development or applied research.
  • Knowledge of natural resources management and gender equality issues.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of Kiswahili or other relevant languages is an asset.
