About the Role

The International Potato Center (CIP) seeks a vibrant and seasoned Communication and Media Specialist to bolster its projects across 12 African countries. This role, based in Nairobi and reporting to the Head of Communication and Public Awareness, entails a spectrum of daily communication tasks such as writing, social media management, web updates, and media relations.


  • Internal Communications Coordination: Ensure effective dissemination of information throughout the center and organize related activities.
  • Media Planning and Implementation: Develop and execute communication plans to enhance brand visibility in target countries, utilizing various media channels.
  • Media Monitoring and Engagement: Track media coverage, maintain media contact lists, and prepare engagement reports for management.
  • Journalist Liaison: Serve as a bridge between scientists and journalists, aligning media coverage with communication objectives.
  • Collaboration Management: Coordinate with editors, writers, and graphic designers to streamline content creation processes.
  • Policy Adherence: Ensure compliance with financial and logistical procedures when engaging consultants and reporting expenses.
  • Process Efficiency: Follow up on planned activities, ensuring coherence and efficiency in line with the CIP communications strategy.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Contribute to the organization’s communications community, sharing updates, lessons, and participating in learning activities.
  • Graphic Arts Project Coordination: Oversee internal and external graphic design projects in collaboration with the design team.
  • Financial Oversight: Ensure accurate charge backs to projects for donor-funded communication products.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to relevant health and safety policies and procedures.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, marketing, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in internal communications.
  • Proficiency in graphic design programs and MS Office.
  • Familiarity with social media management tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Fluency in the official language of the country of operation.
