Summary of Position:

The Head of Department: Food Security, Livelihoods & Resilience will lead the design and development of FSL, resilience, and Climate Change Adaptation programs. Responsibilities include identifying new business opportunities, engaging with donors, providing strategic leadership, and ensuring high-quality program design and scale-up.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Leadership:
    • Develop strategic positioning for the department aligned with the annual country strategy.
    • Lead in the review and implementation of the FSL and resilience strategy.
    • Support in the development and review of FSL and resilience annual work plans and budgets.
    • Provide guidance and support to FSL program managers and field teams.
    • Identify new geographical areas of interest and funding opportunities.
  2. Program Development and Management:
    • Lead the design, planning, and implementation of food security and livelihood programs.
    • Foster partnerships with relevant stakeholders for program effectiveness and sustainability.
    • Ensure harmonization and coherence of recovery and development of FSL approaches.
    • Promote an integrated approach among sectors such as WASH and Nutrition.
  3. Technical Support:
    • Provide technical leadership in areas of food security, agriculture, and livelihoods.
    • Stay updated on emerging trends and best practices in FSL programming.
    • Build the capacity of staff and partners through training and mentorship.
  4. Climate Change Integration:
    • Advocate for policies and practices that promote climate resilience.
    • Foster partnerships with climate change experts and civil society organizations.
    • Represent Action Against Hunger in climate-related forums and working groups.
  5. Monitoring, Evaluation, Surveillance, and Learning:
    • Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation systems to track progress.
    • Lead the documentation and dissemination of lessons learned and best practices.
    • Ensure compliance with donor reporting requirements and standards.
  6. Team Management and Capacity Building:
    • Provide effective leadership and supervision to departmental staff.
    • Contribute to staff performance reviews and career progression.
    • Identify training needs and collaborate with HR for staff development.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • 7+ years’ experience in food systems, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, livelihoods, and Disaster Risk Reduction.
  • Experience working in humanitarian and development contexts, preferably in Kenya.
  • Strong technical expertise in food security and livelihoods programming.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Interest or experience in Cash transfer programs and community-led methodologies.
