Location: Remote

💰 Salary: £1,200 per month

Chayn has a mission to reach 1 million survivors of gender-based violence with our resources, products and services. We’re looking for someone to work alongside our Head of Comms to deliver social media and comms support in line with our brand new comms strategy.

This role is ideal for a social media and/or comms professional with a global lens, has a passion for engagement with survivors of gender-based violence, and thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. You will be responsible for repurposing content, producing high-quality social media posts, and supporting community-building efforts.

Responsibilities

As the Comms and Community Coordinator at Chayn, you will focus your efforts on creating survivor-centered, survivor-led content for social media that helps drive engagement, reach and most importantly helps survivors find our content.

The primary platforms you will coordinate will be Instagram, TikTok and Facebook with some support with Twitter, LinkedIn and Medium.

Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Utilising social media to reach 1 million survivors
    • Using content from our products for social media to help us reach a wider audience
    • Creating and developing engaging content for Instagram and other platforms
    • Translating the overall comms strategy into compelling social media content and take ownership of our social media channels.
    • Helping to develop and maintain our social media content calendar.
    • Developing Google Ads and Meta Ads content with some coordination.
    • Monitoring and reporting on trending content to assist in content creation and development.
    • Staying on top of social media trends and pitching ideas to increase engagement.
    • Coordinating social media campaigns with the Head of Comms as required.
  2. Creating video content with and for survivors that is relatable, informative and supportive.
    • Developing a survivor-focused signature series that utilises video content to engage and support survivors
    • Editing videos – both long and short form – and optimising them for social media consumption
    • Working with our team, our community of volunteers and our 1-1 messaging team who directly support our users, to produce and publish video content
  3. Build an engaged and active community on social media which supports our movement building work.
    • Engaging with and maintaining conversations with our community across social platforms.
    • Writing engaging, insightful copy for captions, blog posts, website, newsletters, and other content, when needed. .
    • Supporting community-building activities, including event administration and outreach.
    • Engage with feedback from our volunteer network to ensure the work is survivor focused and trauma-informed.
    • Organise, schedule and post content during our attendance at key advocacy events and activities; 16 Days of Activism, Commission on the Status of Women and Sexual Assault Awareness Month are great ones to work towards and speak to key issues.
    • Support the creation of newsletter content and grow and engage our subscriber list.
    • Providing general administrative support to ensure smooth execution of comms and community building elements

Your profile

We are looking for an experienced comms and/or social media professional who is passionate about survivor-led comms and bringing our resources to a global audience.

It’s important that all team members have an understanding of intersectionality and systems of oppression and an affinity with Chayn’s aims and organisational values which can be found here.

Essential

  • 4+ years in a comms, marketing or social media position with thorough experience creating content for a global audience
  • Understanding of gender-based violence and passion for intersectional feminism
  • Knowledge and experience in writing about issues related to violence against women, trauma-support and healing
  • Experience of working for diverse cultural and geographical audiences, and a sensitivity to communicating in different cultural and social contexts
  • Excellent native-level written and verbal English, other languages an asset
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills for a variety of audiences
  • Advanced level of experience producing social media content inspiring people into action for Instagram, Facebook, and others
  • Knowledge of what forms of video work best on different social media channels
  • Track record of developing content for multiple online platforms
  • Experience managing, developing and delivering on Google and Meta ads.
  • Design experience and knowledge of design tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Proven track record in creating original content series that deliver views
  • Experience in producing accessible and intersectional content
  • Excellent organisational skills, great attention to detail, comfortable with iterative processes and working in a dynamic environment
  • Has knowledge in current events and pop culture
  • Ability to work under time pressure and with short deadlines
  • Hands-on and can-do approach
  • Flexible working patterns and availability for occasional calls on weekends
  • Good planning and problem-solving ability

Desirable

  • Understanding of the needs of survivors of gender-based violence, and the ecosystem of support
  • Experience working with a team of volunteers to produce ideas and create relatable content
  • Experience of writing in inclusive, non-gendered language;
  • Familiarity with G-Suite products
  • Experience of working remotely
  • Proficiency in languages other than English is a plus

About Chayn

Chayn is an award-winning, open-source collective that leverages technology to empower women against violence and oppression so they can live happier and healthier lives. Chayn started in 2013 to provide survivors of abuse with accurate, diverse and accessible information.

Since our beginnings, over half a million people have accessed our award-winning work online, generating 1.2 million page views. Up to 70% of our volunteers are survivors of abuse which means not only are our projects user-centred–they are user-led. We are experts in trauma-informed work and have developed trauma-informed design principles that we apply at every level of the organisation from HR through to user research, through to UX/UI. We are one of the few feminist technology projects tackling gender-based violence while creating and maintaining openly-licensed products and code.

While we’ve been going for 10 years, Chayn was entirely volunteer-led until 2020 when we started to grow our team of paid staff. We are now a core team of 13, with up to 10 supporting contractors working together remotely from all over the world.

🌺 Bloom – ****A remote trauma support service, offering video courses and reflective webchat that combine the insights of survivors globally with therapeutic practices to heal from trauma. We currently have partnerships with Bumble and Badoo where we offer their users bespoke Bloom programmes of support.

📖 Manipulation is abuse – A guide for survivors and allies, to help identify manipulative situations and offer suggestions on ways to deal with them.

📖 How to build a domestic abuse case without a lawyer – A practical guide to collecting and presenting evidence for divorce, criminal cases and/or child custody. Available in English, Arabic, Urdu, Italian, and Portuguese.

Research and thought leadership

📖 Orbits: a guide on how we can design interventions to tech abuse that are intersectional, survivor-centred, and trauma-informed. Co-created with thinkers, practitioners, and survivors from around the world, the guide focuses on three areas that are vital for effectively tackling tech abuse: technology, research, and policy. It explores how systems are failing survivors and how we can advance a different approach that leaves no survivor behind.

Products and services for organisations

🗞️ Bloom for Bumble and Badoo programme is an industry-first partnership where Chayn is providing a customised version of our remote trauma support service Bloom to their community.

🗞️ Training for organisations on vicarious trauma for their staff. This is especially useful for humanitarian workers, frontline gender-based violence organisations, customer support staff and content moderators.

Changing media narratives

Our offer

This work will be undertaken on a freelance basis, we are unable to sponsor visas.

In addition to compensation, Chayn offers:

  • This position is fully remote. However, the position holder must be able to meet with team members in both PST and GMT timezones at least once a week.
