Youth across Kilifi North Sub-County have embraced the new phase of the Kazi Mtaani initiative, officially dubbed the Climate Works Initiative, with enthusiasm and hope. The verification and shortlisting exercise, held at the Kilifi Township Chief’s office, attracted hundreds of young people eager to secure positions under the national government’s temporary employment scheme.

The initiative aims to provide short-term public works jobs focused on climate-smart sanitation and infrastructure maintenance, and has been strategically organized by ward—covering Sokoni, Kibarani, and Mnarani—to ensure transparency and equal representation. Government officials overseeing the process emphasized that fairness and accountability remain central to the recruitment process, boosting community trust and participation.

Many of the applicants expressed excitement and relief at the opportunity to earn a steady income, especially during a time when formal employment opportunities remain limited. Felix Obuya, one of the shortlisted youth, shared his optimism after confirming his name during the verification. Richard Mwaringa, another hopeful candidate, noted that the program offered not just a wage but a lifeline for himself and his family.

Beyond immediate job placements, young leaders like Emmanuel Charo from the Jikwamue Youth Initiative advocated for the expansion of Kazi Mtaani to include long-term empowerment options like ICT training, entrepreneurship development, and agribusiness support. His sentiments highlight a growing desire among Kilifi’s youth for sustainable development and self-reliance through structured, government-backed programs.

The Kazi Mtaani program has already been recognized nationally for its role in boosting youth engagement during periods of economic uncertainty. In Kilifi, the initiative continues to restore a sense of dignity among participants by offering meaningful community roles such as maintaining public infrastructure, beautifying shared spaces, and improving sanitation.

For many, the program represents more than just a temporary job—it symbolizes a fresh start, civic responsibility, and hope for a brighter future. As the verification process moves forward, hundreds of young people remain eager to contribute to their community’s growth while building skills that can translate into long-term employment or entrepreneurship.
