About Moving The Goalposts

Moving The Goalposts is a pioneer sport for development organization founded in 2002 to empower girls and young women through football. The organization works with girls and young women between the ages of 9 to 25 years in the Coastal Region of Kenya, notably, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, and Tana River. MTG’s purpose is to strengthen the voice, impact, and influence of girls and young women by providing opportunities for them to play football, take on leadership roles, and learn about their rights and how to claim those rights, with a focus on sexual reproductive health and choice.

Job Purpose

The Safeguarding Officer will spearhead the coordination, implementation, and monitoring of MTG’s Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct, while strengthening other organizational policies and procedures on safeguarding. The role ensures that MTG fulfills its legal obligations, commitments, and responsibilities to keep all children and adults safe within its scope, with a focus on preventing and protecting children and young adults from harm and abuse, as well as preventing and addressing discrimination and harassment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Policy Review and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with the Safeguarding Policy by staff, volunteers, visitors, associates, contractors, partners, and donors.
  • Collaborate with organizational teams to review, update, and revise the safeguarding policy and related documents.
  • Conduct regular safeguarding risk assessments and execute mitigation plans.
  • Lead the promotion of safeguarding good practice in MTG activities.

Incident Management

  • Ensure all safeguarding incidents reported are addressed conclusively.
  • Ensure survivor-centered and rights-based approaches in prevention and response mechanisms.
  • Monitor progress of cases and ensure follow-up on recommendations.

Capacity Building

  • Build capacity of MTG staff and volunteers on safeguarding and PSEAH through training sessions.
  • Coordinate, train, and work with safeguarding champions in MTG program.
  • Conduct community sensitization on Child protection/safeguarding and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Support to Program Implementation

  • Support all departments and program delivery teams to lead on program safeguarding.
  • Monitor and ensure safe programming integration in program design and delivery.
  • Allocate resources/budgets for efficient mainstreaming of safeguarding activities.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent MTG in relevant conferences and forums related to safeguarding.
  • Manage safeguarding-related partnerships and assess new partnerships for compliance.


  • Prepare safeguarding reports for Senior Management Team and board committees.
  • Ensure timely implementation of reporting guidelines and procedures.
  • Contribute to development of funding proposals addressing safeguarding.


  • Manage partnerships across sport for development and safeguarding sectors.
  • Support creation and management of safeguarding coalitions and community of practice.
  • Identify opportunities for research on safeguarding in sport.

Communication Management

  • Participate in periodic meetings in MTG and provide contacts for database.
  • Coordinate with project teams in documentation and communication of safeguarding incidents.
  • Support the production of project-related communication tools.

External Communications

  • Assist in project special events.
  • Support the production of project-related communication tools.
  • Identify opportunities to collaborate with other organizations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Sociology/Social Work, Psychology, or related field.
  • Training course in safeguarding/child protection.
  • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience in similar roles.
  • Thorough understanding of relevant safeguarding legislation, regulations, and policies.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to communicate sensitively and empathetically.
  • Analytical and decision-making skills.
