General Summary and Background:

Chemonics is seeking a Senior Accountant for the Afya Ugavi Activity under the USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program – Procurement and Supply Management project. The project aims to address the supply chain and health commodity systems strengthening needs in Kenya, focusing on family health, malaria, and HIV/AIDS programs. This role involves providing technical assistance at both the national and county levels, supporting the Ministry of Health (MOH), Department of Family Health (DFH), National Malaria Control Program (NMCP), and the National AIDS and STI Control Program (NASCOP).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

  • Reviewing all transactions booked in the accounting software (Abacus) and ensuring proper coding.
  • Monitoring and prompting the Head Office Field Accounting & Finance Team (FAST) to push wires in Field Office (FO) Abacus upon fund reception.
  • Reviewing VAT tracker for accuracy and compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Ensuring refunds from vendors through monitoring approved VAT claim (DA1) forms.
  • Preparing monthly payroll and ensuring timely submission of statutory deductions.
  • Conducting monthly bank reconciliations and ensuring clearance of reconciling items.
  • Preparing and submitting monthly Financial Reports (Locals) and serving as the primary contact for the home office Field Accounting & Compliance Team (FACT).
  • Conducting petty cash spot checks and preparing reconciliation reports.
  • Ensuring compliance with USAID rules and regulations in all transactions.
  • Providing guidance and supervision to Accountants and Accounts Assistant.
  • Facilitating provision of information and documentation during internal and external audits.
  • Performing other duties assigned by the Finance and Accounts Specialist.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business, or Commerce. Master’s Degree in Finance, Commerce, Business, or related field preferred.
  • CPA-K or ACCA qualifications and membership of a professional accounting body.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of USAID rules & regulations.
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience with INGO, with at least 2 years at a Senior level.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Accounting software (e.g., ABACUS).

Level of Effort and Location:

  • This is a long-term position based in Nairobi, Kenya, with intermittent local travel.
  • Immediate through to the end of the Project’s life (September 28, 2024).


  • The Senior Accountant will report to the Finance and Accounting Specialist.
